keeping it simple (for now)

at the moment, I’m only going to put in half of my 2 cents, so I guess I own you a penny.

from my brief explorations, I found 1 error.

when I previewed a submission in the ‘Contribute’ ‘Submit Content’ ‘Writing Submission’
it said:
‘Posted December 31st, 1969 by notalther’
when I actually submitted it though, it put the correct date in, so not too big a deal.

gotta go to bed as I have work on the morrow, but I’ll come back and look around some more later.

Hey kids, First off thanks

Hey kids,
First off thanks for remembering my email address and sending me the update notice, haven’t seen you guys since Wondercon and managed to iss you at APE. Don’t worry though I’ve officially registered, I’m now just another cog in the machine.
The new site looks great but there are a few things I noticed during my cursory inspection:
1. The RSS feed link send me to a malfunctioning site showing straight up html code and no slick graphics or complex fonts.
2. There appears to be not pertinent data in the ‘Support’ sections… the closest you have is the “Publish It” section which is basically a “We would have something here but we spilt our Bloody Mary’s on our keyboards” (this, of course, is a comendable excuse)
3. And finally, the two options given to vote towards my preference for Dave’s mom are both limiting and inexact in exactly how much or little I enjoy her…regularly…
Thanks Guys!

My first testdrive...

Hey. Here’s my feedback so far…

Things I like:
-I like how the nav functions on the left side of the site. It is well organized and easy to use.
-The content from what I have seen so far is great.
-I like the layout of the page, and the colors used.
-I especially like the concept of the site. I will definitely want to contribute, and keep on checking back to see what is happening.

Things I would change:
-On the Download (free) section I would have the links to the download go to an _blank page. That way when people won’t lose the site once if they click the “x” versus the back button. I think people tend to click the X more than the other. This also applies to any other area where you have the free downloads/ and links to mp3s/More Cool Stuff sections, etc. Especially when you are on God’s Acre’s and the Brainchild page…it interrupts the music.
-When you click on an Ology Feature, it would be nice if the Ology sublinks stayed open on the nav menu.
-I would change the nav on the “about” section to keep the list of links in the section visible. I do like the current nav also, but in addition I would keep the list. That way, if I want to read “For Creators” and then skip to “So What Do I Do?” I can without going through the in between. Unless that is by design so people will read all of it…

Things that are broken/errors:
-The pictures on the blog about the Swarm Gallery show are not showing….I have found this in a couple places, I think. I think the properties show the pics linked to Scott’s website.
-You have the Book of Clav as “Just Released” on the homepage.
-Angie’s Currently Creating article goes to a page not found.
-When I click on the “Help Build Ology 18” link, it takes me to a page that says “Access Denied -You are not authorized to access this page.” I hope that is not right…is there special access needed for this?
-Takes about 5 to 10 seconds for the layers of the site to load at first. I don’t know if this is really an error, but I am working on pretty fast machines and networks, so this may be longer for someone with slower stuff. And I think you lose people after 10 seconds.
-The link to Listen to Podcast: on the Eleventy Billion… page does not work for me.
-Is the Brock, Stock, and Bucket feature missing from the Issue 17 content list?
-Mistress Angie’s Bio link goes to an Omnibucket Page Not Found
-Same with the Clavinator’s bio.
-This may be because I am signed in, but the Subscribe link “Get an account…” goes to a “Access Denied -You are not authorized to access this page.”

I have went through the site pretty thoroughly, so I think that is it.
Overall, everything looks great. It will be exciting to see how the site evolves.

loading time

first of all, nice job on the site everybody involved!

picking up Lola’s point about slow response time: I (browsing the site from Finland, Europe) also checked out what it’s about with the noticably slow response time via visualroute and it shows that from all my 23 hops over the globe the last hop on the media temple server is the remarkably slowest of them all.

18-22 timed out.
Maybe you guys check that out from your side of the ocean…but right this moment it was pretty slow to load, not just in figures, but felt.

other things, rather technical also: the http://www.drupal.omnibucket.com/files/zen-fixed_logo.png, http://www.drupal.omnibucket.com/themes/zen/zen/images/background_footer… and the http://www.drupal.omnibucket.com/themes/zen/zen/images/header_default.pn… really stand off from the background or fit unsmoothly in my browser (FF 2.0.0.6).

hey, you asked, ay?
cheers,
k.

Response to 'My first test drive'

Thanks Peggy, that was a thorough look-through indeed! Here’s a few comments on the comments:

-I changed all the downloadables to load in a new window.
-I added the submenu to both the Ology and About sections.
-Missing blog pictures fixed.
-“Help Build Ology 18” is for Contributor access only which we assign. It may not be the best way to run this, but it’s functioning as intended.
-Listen to Podcast link on Eleventy Billion fixed.
-There was no Brock, Stock, and Bucket feature in Issue 17.
-I figured out the “Page not found” bug for user profiles. I had created user profiles for all out past contributors as a courtesy…but it turns out they have to have logged in at least once for the profile to be viewable. I fixed that for Angie and Tyler so far, but will ask the others to log in when I send out the launch email shortly.
-Yes, if you’re already logged in you won’t be able to visit the subscribe page. The messaging is a bit weird though, I agree.

Cheers!

You are welcome

You’re welcome. Glad to help out.

One more thing…I would also have the links added into the articles (like the one in the Interview with Francesco D’Isa article for example) pop up in a new window as well. Yeah, I know…I guess it’s my internet marketing background…must keep them on your site. :)

As far as -“Help Build Ology 18” is for Contributor access, if possible, and if you have not already, I would add a note to the page stating why the access is denied, and maybe how access is gained. That way you are not asking for help on one page, and then in the next click effectively saying “not you”. You never know, you may miss out on some awesome content.

Later!
Lola
